The YMCA of Arlington is a human care organization which puts Christian principles into practice through programs and activities that encourage the development of a healthy spirit, mind and body for individuals of all religions, races, ages and communities. We focus on five character values in everything we do: caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.
The first YMCA of Arlington officially opened its doors in temporary offices on October 1, 1958 after a $400,000 fundraising campaign led by then-Mayor Tom Vandergriff. During its 50 years, we have grown to three branches and is the city's largest provider of child care for school-age children.
Here’s what else we do:
• The YMCA of Arlington is the largest provider of childcare for school-age kids in our area, serving more than 1,200
kids a
day in safe, affordable before- and after-school programs at 20 school sites in Arlington and Mansfield as well as
six summer
camps.
• More than 16,000 kids participate in all kinds of sports. Special needs kids with autism, mental challenges and in
wheelchairs
participate in The Miracle league, giving them the opportunity to experience the excitement of team sports.
• Almost 1,000 kids and their dads participate in our Father/Child program with activities for a lifetime of memories.
• Our Strong Kids Campaign has raised over $400,000 with great effort from volunteers and staff. All of the proceed
from this
annual campaign goes directly into the Financial Aid fund to ensure no one is turned away from YMCA
membership and
programs based on inability to pay.
• More than 3,800 children have learned water safety and how to swim in YMCA swim lessons. Additonally, with
backyard
pool lessons and aquatics programs, more children than ever before have the opportunity to learn how to swim
and be safe in the
water.
• Our Teen Programs continue to grow in Teen Leadership Council, with over 100 teens coming together to meet
twice a
month, plan local service projects, field trips and overnight trips. Our teens have traveled to New Orleans to assist
in rebuilding
efforts in the Upper Ninth Ward, served missions in New York City, and locally at Mission Arlington, Meals on
Wheels, Tarrant
County Food Bank, and more!
At the YMCA of Arlington we are building strong kids, strong families and strong communities!
